Randolph Rodrigues, said to be one of the masterminds behind Friday's jailbreak, narrowly escaped capture, late yesterday afternoon, after he was spotted in the Mazaruni area.

Police said that Joint Services ranks scouring the area spotted Rodrigues, who was fetching a bucket of plantains at the time.

However, the fugitive managed to flee into the jungle even as the ranks fired shots in his direction.

The ranks have since surrounded the area, and officials expressed optimism that he would be re-captured today.

Officials believe that Rodrigues was one of the masterminds behind the jailbreak. It is alleged that he was armed with a cutlass and had threatened a prison warder.

At the time of his escape, Rodrigues was serving a 25-year manslaughter sentence for killing a retired headmistress.

The elderly woman was slain in her home at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.

On Monday, Joint Services ranks recaptured four of the nine prisoners at Karrau, Mazaruni.

One of the fugitives, Trevor Mc Lean, called ‘Footprints', was shot in the shoulder.

The others re-captured are Royston Reid, called ‘Knuckles'; Anil Sanichar, and Alvin Shivnarine.

Still at large are Dineshwar Sooklall, Asrudeen Khan, Kenneth Richardson, Ryan Ramfarose and Randolph Rodrigues.

At around 16:00 hours on Friday, the nine men, who were among 57 housed in the main prison, overpowered two guards, and escaped into the forested area surrounding the facility.
