BRFIDGETOWN, Barbados - Can explosive opening batsmen Philo Wallace and Chris Gayle set the lush-green Cave Hill Campus playing field ablaze with their scintillating stroke-play against the awesome Australians, who are welcoming back their ace fast-bowler Glenn McGrath?

That question will be answered over the next three days as the dashing duo, hard-hitting Jamaican Ricardo Powell, Kenya’s World Cup star, Collins Obuya and Barbadian seamer Corey Collymore team up with a bunch of book-crazy University students to take on the world’s best professional cricketers.

This Vice-Chancellor's quintet of guests, along with new West Indies’ all-rounder David Bernard are expected to perform the lead roles in the historic three-day tour match which starts today at the renamed Three Ws Oval, which is hosting first-class cricket for the first time.

Wallace, a pugnacious former West Indies Test and One-Day opener, will lead the Vice-Chancellor’s XI against the Aussies, who have declared their intentions to rest their two lethal fast bowler Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie.

The match could be a significant one for the 23-year-old Gayle as he will be looking for a big score to boost his chances of a recall to the regional side after being controversially dropped for the first two Tests.

Back-up support in the Vice-Chancellor’s XI will come from out-of-favour Jamaican wicketkeeper Matthew Sinclair, West Indies Under-23 ‘B’ team fast bowler Andrew Richardson and former Barbados Under-19 batsman Jason Haynes, who plays locally for the famous Empire club.

Other members of the Vice-Chancellor’s XI are former Guyana Under-15 vice-captain Raymond Singh, who is now just 16 years old, Trinidadian left-handed batsman Dary Balgobin, Jamaican batsman Maurice Clarke and Barbadian fast bowler Dwayne Jordan, who represents Division One champions, Banks.

Australia’s captain Steve Waugh has however revealed that the experienced McGrath, who belatedly joined the squad in Trinidad and Tobago a few days ago after remaining in Australia with his sick wife, will be in the line-up for the tune-up game.

According to Waugh, McGrath is a "certainty" for the Test side and he will be looking to get in some match practice ahead of the Barbados third Test, May 1-5.

“We got a big squad at the moment. It is about 17 or 18 players so all the guys who haven’t played much cricket will definitely play and the guys who have done well in the last couple of matches will probably rest,” Waugh said.

“Most of the quick bowlers. I would say Lee and Gillespie won’t play but a couple of the batsmen will have to back up,” Waugh added.

That means the pacy Brad Williams and Ashley Noffke will join McGrath and possibly Andy Bichel in the bowling attack.

Barbadians will get a chance to see the exciting young Aussie middle order batsman Michael Clarke in action for the first time as well as the prolific Martin Love, who have both been heavy scorers in Australia’s state cricket.

Regular wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist will be rested for the match and Jimmy Maher, a member of Australia’s successful World Cup squad, will do duties behind the stumps.

Vice-captain Ricky Ponting is also expected to get some much-needed rest following the exertions of scoring a hundred and a double century in the first two Tests.

A lot of work has been done at the Campus over the past two months with the outfield being regarded and gallons of water dumped onto it to ensure its green look.

A new wooden pavilion has also been built as well as indoor nets to accommodate at least six practice strips and a Walk of Fame, with all the centuries and five-wicket hauls achieved by West Indians in Test cricket, engraved on the wall.

Temporary seating and several tents have been placed around the ground to accommodate the many spectators, especially visiting Australian supporters and University students, who are expected to converge on the scenic ground, just outside the island's capital.
