Tropical View Hotel

The $100M 26-room Tropical View International Hotel was opened yesterday in Camp-bellville at a former pharmacy.

In a short opening ceremony at the hotel's Delph Street and Campbell Avenue location, proprietor Navendra Doodnauth dedicated the facility to the memory of his mother Ashwini Doodnauth who was gunned down on November 28, 2006 during a robbery in Kitty.

Navendra who is a jeweller by profession said building the facility was challenging citing among difficulties those he faced with labour shortages and his mother's death. The project he explained began in July 2006. He decided to build the facility after Guyana was awarded the Super Eight matches.

The facility comprises single and family rooms. The family rooms have as many as three beds.

Manniram Prashad, Minis-ter of Tourism, Industry and Commerce said at the opening that "the tourism sector is growing as a result; there is need for more facilities like this." In his view more and more hotels will have to be built.

"We are here to assist you," said the minister.

Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Office for Invest-ment (Go-Invest), Geoffrey Da Silva noted that "Guyana has a lot of young dynamic entrepreneurs" pointing out Navendra as one. He was complimented for finishing the facility in some nine months, although some work was still ongoing at the facility.

Some 45 investors building hotels were granted a 100% waiver of duties and taxes on building materials, appliances, machines and on equipment.

DaSilva cited hotels being built in Berbice, Essequibo, Georgetown and in Bartica.
