What is your favourite place to eat out? We asked the man and the woman in the street this question and this is what they had to say:

Sulunge Straughn, UG student: 'One of my favourite places to eat out is Upscale Restaurant their food tastes great, the service is good and the place is clean. JR Burger is another good place to eat. I especially like the smoothies. I also love to eat at Royal Castle. I love the branch located at the Mall, their burgers are good and the place is conveniently located.'

Flavio Comacho, assessment officer: 'I live in Bartica but when my wife and I visit Georgetown we love to eat at Buddy's Restaurant on Sheriff Street. I love their buffet service and I like their sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. The prices are reasonable and the place is terrific. I also love to eat at the Windjammer Restaurant in Kitty. Their food is also good and the staff are very friendly and it's what I look out for.'

Keeran Singh, UG student: 'My favourite place to eat out is the Golden Coast Restaurant. The food there is great, service is prompt and there are always pleasant faces when you're being served. The atmosphere there is always great with the fish aquarium. The entire place is picturesque in my opinion which is the reason I love to eat there.'

Ray Ramessar, miner: 'I love to eat at New Thriving Restaurant. I love Chinese food and KFC chicken, which I often eat. Twice a week I go to the New Thriving Restaurant to eat their grilled fish, which I believe is exotic. I plan on going to Buddy's Mei-Tung Restaurant because I've heard great things about their food.'

Basmattie Sukhdu, library assistant: 'I like to eat at New Thriving Restaurant because it's a nice place, it's clean and the food is good. I only go out to eat there on special occasions. I also eat out at Fogarty's Rose Bud café. Their food is good as well and prices are reasonable. I have not been able to eat out anywhere for the year because I have to pay VAT on everything.'

Joe Shamlall, labourer: 'I don't really have a favourite place that I eat at. However, I do prefer to go to Black Indian restaurant on Robb Street. Whenever I go there I would usually order fried rice or cook up. The food there tastes very good and the price is just right.'

Juliet Rose, housewife: 'I love to eat at the Golden Coast Restaurant. I used to work there and I know that they prepare their food to the best standard. The staff are also very nice. I also love to eat at the Hotel Tower. Their food is good also and they have great service. I also like to eat at New Thriving Restaurant. I have eaten at so many places but I love eating at the places I mentioned.'

Emille Giddings, student: 'I love to eat out at VIP Pizza Plus on Sheriff Street. I love it because it's very private, it has security and the food is good. I find that nowhere else in Guyana makes sub-sandwiches like them. Their desserts are also very good and it's cheaper than some places. The employees are also nice.'

Shondell Success, teacher: 'I don't eat out anymore because I had a bad experience once while out with a girlfriend. I prefer not to eat at any fast food place. I don't like not knowing how they prepare their food. I prefer to cook my own meals because I'm a firm believer that knowing what you're eating is important. I stopped eating out altogether about a year ago when my friend and I with our kids were having lunch at a fast food place. After drinking the drinks, we requested water and we opened the cups to pour the ice out and saw a lot of brown stuff, it just turned me off completely. I personally feel that fast food places don't take time to do things properly. When they first start out it's okay but after they have competition or a number of customers they start getting sloppy and their standards drop.'

Komal Singh, teacher: 'I prefer to eat home because I know how my food is prepared. The food at restaurants tastes different from my home-cooked meal. I do eat out but that's only when I have no choice, if I get caught up doing something and I have to stop somewhere. I would most times eat fried rice.'
