There are many events carded to ensure the best entertainment experience ever on the local shores during the World Cup 2007 staging here. The major hotels, clubs, malls, or associated groups are planning their own street parties. However, based on our research thus far, there are several major events, and so we offer you the details as they are available.



Guyana Craft and Gift Show: Guyanese Roots and Rhythms

Dates: March 29 - April 1

Opening Ceremony will be held on March 29. Starting Time: 18:30hrs. His Excellency Bharrat Jagdeo will perform the honours. Premiere viewing of the Guyana Roots and Rhythms Show that will continue throughout the Exposition on the other nights. "Guyanese Roots and Rhythms Show " brings alive our rich and diverse history and culture through various media, drama, song, dance and poetry.

It is a show that will truly capture the essence of the Guyanese people. Other nightly entertainment will be provided by popular bands and stereo sound sys­tems. Sponsors for these events are Banks DIH, DDL Night and Ansa McAl, who will be hosting events on March 30, 31, and April l, respectively.

Gates will be open at 17:00hrs at the National Exhibition Centre, Sophia. Entry: G$500 (Adults), G$300 (Children)

International village

This activity, slated for staging between March 27-April 9, comes courtesy of the Georgetown Mayor & City Council. It's a Food, Beverage and Cultural Fair at Independence Park (Parade Ground) on Middle Street, Georgetown. Start Time: 18:00hrs daily.

Banks DIH Fun, Food and Fashion Fiesta

This nightly cultural presentation will be held at Thirst Park and features food, fashion and musical entertainment from Park Side Steel Orchestra.

The fashion show will include designs and choreography from Donna Ramsammy-James. This event is slated for March 27, 29 and 31 as well as April 2, 4 and 8. It includes a buffet dinner which would be served from 19:00hrs to 21:00hrs.

Tickets cost: $6,000 . Time: 6pm to midnight.

DCC - Legend's Village: A Truly Guyanese Ex­perience

The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) is set to launch a ‘Legends Village'.

The fourteen-night affair is to be used to recognise Guyanese cricketers for their grace, sportsmanship and exemplary statesmanship on and off the field.

The ‘Legends Village' will open its doors from 5:00pm on March 27, with an activity to honor a Guyanese legend, Mr. Lancelot Gibbs.

The club has also taken the initiative of petitioning the Mayor and City Councilors of Georgetown, with the hope of having Almond Street renamed ‘Lance Gibbs Street'. It also proposes to seek, in the near future, to have the streets surrounding the DCC ground renamed after three other outstanding Guyanese cricketers - Roy Fredericks, Roger Harper and Clive Lloyd.

The ‘Legends Village' will see a series of events, including corporate receptions, an arts and craft section, Guyanese cuisine, replays of World Cup matches, cultural presentations, music, dance and games. Nightly entertainment will feature the likes of several popular local entertainers.

A legend or a cricketing personality is expected to be present in the ‘Village' each night to sign autographs and, where possible, give endorsements.

This ambitious undertaking will see the DCC's expenditure superseding $10M.

The event will be open to the public from March 27 – April 9.

“It will be a unique 14-day experience for the Guyanese populace and cricketing fans in general,” said cricketing veteran Ronald Austin, who had represented Guyana at the under-19 level.

Demerara Distillers Limited activities

Between the period March 28 – April 8 DDL has a list of activities planned for World Cup entertainment seekers including a Rum festival, several 70's and 80's parties and Pool parties.

The El Dorado Rum Festivals are to be staged on March 28 th , 29 th and April 2 nd at Le Meridien, Grand Coastal Inn and at DDL Sports Club respectively.



The El Dorado 70s & 80s parties are billed for staging on March 30, 31 as well as April 3, 4 and 8 at Palm Court, Latino Bar, Sidewalk Cafι, Club El Latino and Club Sky 7 respectively.



The El Dorado Poolside parties are slated for April 4, 5 and 7 at Buddy's International Hotel, Sea Breeze Hotel and the El Latino Bar.

Cacique Promotions – Guyarama

Between the period March 30 - April 9

Patrons are being promised nightly cultural entertainment, cuisine and wine samplings. In addition, patrons will also be treated to fashion extravaganzas featuring international models and international designers Roger Gary, Andrea Mc Adam and Facts and Roses. The fashion expo will also be used as launching pad for Guyana Fashion Week at the Umana Yana. The cost is G$6,000.

Pageants

The Stars International: Inaugural Ms Guyana/India Beauty Pageant is slated for staging on March 31 on the lawns of Red House, Georgetown. This event is scheduled to start from 19:00hrs and is an invitation only occasion. It will feature a dinner and an Indian fashion cultural extravaganza that will see the crowning of Guyana's Beauty Ambasador to the international pageant slated for late April in the USA. Eleven delegates will take on each other.

Fun days

The Jubilee Resort is offering on March 31 a chance to cool down and relax to the sounds of Steel Pan.

Georgetown Turf Club Horse Racing Meet. Venue: Mocha Arcadia

Starting Time: 13:00hrs





Boxing

Boxing fans can look forward to some international action on March 31 at the Cliff Anderson Sorts Hall. The six-fight card, put on by the T.J. International Promotions group will feature Australian-based Guyanese Gairy "Superman" St. Clair taking on a Brazilian.

CIOG/HIFAZ/MYO Evening of Ghazals, Qaseedas and Naats



On April 5 the Muslim Youth Organization's Auditorium will come alive with music and chanting from 1 9:00hrs.

In addition the Muslim Youth Organization is to be opened as a recreational facility after matches and on off days.

Bartica Easter Regatta

The gateway to the interior will come alive with entertainment, leisure and sport activities from April 7- 9. The event would be used to crown the 2007 Miss Bartica Regatta Queen. The Regatta Pavilion will also be alive with action to see which boat racer can rise above the thrills and spills in the Essequibo River to walk away with the champion racer trophy. Fifteen races are carded and a motor bike is up for grabs.

Splashmin's Fun Park and Resort

Aside from offering a true aqua leisure experience for the entire CWC period and beyond, the resort will on April 8 become little Brazil. Creating the atmosphere will be the Banda Ca­lypso, one of Brazil's biggest musical bands.
