Universal Janitorial Services, yesterday, officially launched a massive clean-up programme in the capital city. The initiative is aimed at improving the aesthetics of national monuments in preparation for Cricket World Cup (CWC).

Project coordinator Hewitt Alleyne, revealed that the venture, at an estimated cost exceeding $1M, will see the refurbishing of the Queen Victoria and Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow statues; the 1763, Indian Arrival, African Liberation and Boerasirie Water Supply monuments, as well as the bust of LFS Burnham and the Cenotaph.

Before yesterday's proceedings (on Monday) the company had already completed work on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Promenade Gardens .

Alleyne stressed that in any part of the world, monuments are a reference point for tourists and with the influx of visitors expected we would want to impress them, and encourage their return.

He added that the objective of the scheme is an attempt to present Guyana 's treasures in a pristine state.

The coordinator revealed that the programme was launched in collaboration with City Hall, the CWC Local Organising Committee and Tourism Authority, who are providing technical logistic support.

Alleyne further revealed that this will be an ongoing enterprise in an effort to alleviate some of City Hall's burdens.
