Guyana 's prison population nears 2,000

Guyana 's prison population has grown to a total of 1955 inmates.

This is according to figures presented to the National Assembly by Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee.

The figures were presented in response to questions from opposition Member of Parliament Raphael Trotman of the Alliance for Change. According to the figures as of December 1 last year, the Georgetown Prison accounts for just over half of the total prison population with a total of 983, of which 637 are on remand and 346 are convicted prisoners.

The New Amsterdam facility holds the second largest number of inmates,370, which is made up of 291 males and 79 females. This is followed by Mazaruni with 204; Sibley Hall, 157; Lusignan, 130 and Timehri 111.

Out of the total prison population, 1158 are convicted prisoners while 797 are on remand.
