President Bharrat Jagdeo yesterday visited Berbice where he inspected a number of projects throughout the Region.

Among the locations visited were De Edward Village, Region Five, where construction is about to begin on the Berbice River Bridge.

He held discussions with contractors, engineers and other workers who updated him on the progress of the works.

The Head of State expressed concerns relative to the construction in terms of alignment with the road.

He later visited the Skeldon Sugar Modernisation Project where he was also brought up-to-date on the rate of construction which is about 30 percent complete, while equipment procurement stands at approximately 90 percent.

The engineers at the plant are awaiting the arrival of about 100 Chinese nationals to work in special areas. The delay has been attributed to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) visa requirement which has been implemented to facilitate Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007.

Before leaving the Region, the President joined thousands of supporters who had converged on the Babu John cremation site, to observe the tenth death anniversary of Guyana’s architect of democracy and former President, Dr Cheddi Jagan.

He related to the thousands who attended the ceremony that even though it has been ten years since Dr. Jagan’s death, his works are still pretty much alive. He pointed to Dr. Jagan’s notion of a new global human order, which highlighted the inequalities between rich and poor nations.

President Jagdeo also made reference to Dr. Jagan’s call for greater inclusion of poor countries in policy-making and his promise to develop the sugar industry which is now being undertaken through the Skeldon Sugar Modernisation Plant.

The Head of State said that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), was inspired by Dr. Jagan’s vision of a party remaining committed to globalization, economic projection and social cohesion.

Joining the anniversary observance were Technical Consultant of the Guyana National Stadium at Providence Walter Willis, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robsen Benn, General Secretary of the PPP/C Donald Ramotar and former President Mrs. Janet Jagan.

The anniversary took the form of cultural presentations, musical renditions and accolades to the late “son of the soil.” (GINA)
