THE new security regulations in place for Cricket World Cup 2007 were said to have snared its first victim Friday, the Trinidad Express newspaper reported yesterday.

It said the initiative led to the arrest of an associate of accused Guyanese drug dealer, Roger Khan.

The suspect, who is also a Guyanese national, reportedly arrived in Trinidad around 1 p.m. from Venezuela Friday, aboard an Aeropostal flight. He was supposed to board another flight which would take him to Guyana.

Instead, he was detained by two local police officers from the Organised Crime and Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB), as well as two agents from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency, the newspaper said

The Express did not name the Guyanese suspect detained but other media reports identified him as auto sales businessman and racing car driver, Peter Morgan.

The Express said it understands that an attempt was made to extradite the suspect to the United States, but the move was blocked when local attorneys, Randy Deepoo, Odai Ramischand and Jagdeo Singh intervened with an intent to challenge the extradition order.

The Express said it also understands that six of the suspect's cohorts were arrested in the U.S. and are in prison awaiting trial for drug trafficking.

It said the suspect's associate, Khan, is also in a New York prison awaiting trial for drug trafficking.

Khan was arrested in Trinidad last year and was flown to the U.S. before local attorneys could intervene on his behalf.
