GEORGETOWN Mayor Hamilton Green Wednesday announced plans for hosting a mega international food, beverage and cultural festival in the city which will be dubbed the ‘Georgetown International Village’.

The festival, to be held under the theme ‘Georgetown’s Celebration of the World’s Cultures’, is scheduled for the period that coincides with Guyana’s hosting of Cricket World Cup (CWC) tournament matches, Mr. Green said.

He said the “culinary and cultural potpourri” is expected to attract large crowds with its unique attractions that offer fun and entertainment for both locals and visitors alike, enticing persons with displays of tasty treats, mouth watering meals and thirst quenching beverages from around the world.

Announcing the event at a press conference in his office, Green said it will be more than an average food fest.

It will be, he said, a culinary celebration of multicultural pride, proving that different ethnicities can come together and prosper, and will recognise the capital city’s growing diverse character.

He said that from Brazilian fare such as Churrasco, to Jamaican Jerk Pork and from the Cuban Mojito to Guyana’s Rum and Coke, the festival will have something savoury for everyone.

Green said the event, being organized by the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), is expected to take the taste buds of Guyanese, tourists, and visiting cricket fans on a world tour.

In fact, persons of all walks of life visiting this grand event will be given the opportunity to savour the unique foods, snacks and fine juices, cocktails, beers and wines and other beverages that are the pride of Guyana, the Caribbean, Latin America, North America, Europe, Asia and many other exotic locales, he said.

The Georgetown International Village, which is planned to be an exciting event for the entire family, will be open daily from 17:00h to 23:00h at the Parade Ground.
