BARBADOS convincingly beat Guyana by five wickets at approximately 15:53 h yesterday at the Bourda ground to take an unassailable 54 points lead in the Carib Beer Series competition and, more importantly, they captured the regional title for the twentieth time.

The Barbados captain and man-of-the-match Ryan Hinds (5-19) and hostile fast bowling from Tino Best (4-13) conspired to demolish Guyana for a paltry 90 in just 30 overs in the face of an inexplicable second innings batting disaster.

Even though Barbados lost on first innings when they made 268 replying to Guyana’s 285, the Bajans fought back gallantly and put themselves in a winning position by lunch time on the penultimate day which was delayed because of early morning rain.

Scores in the match: Guyana 285 and 90; Barbados 268 and 111 for five.

Barbados wicketkeeper Carlo Morris hit the winning run smashing off-spinner Royston Crandon to the middle-wicket boundary for a six as Barbados finished on 111 for five to give them an outright win by five wickets.

The other not-out batsman was Alcindo Holder on one. Earlier, Shamarh Brooks and veteran Floyd Reifer hit 28 and 27 respectively, as left-arm orthodox spinner Veerasammy Permaul snared three for 25 from his eleven overs.

When the Guyanese resumed on the penultimate day at 22 for one and with a small lead of 17, the sprinkle of spectators would have been looking forward to a more decent total from the Guyanese batsmen.

But Hinds and Best disappointed them, picking up wickets at will after the local batsmen showed no spine against some good Barbados bowling.

Acting skipper Travis Dowlin who was on 16 and Assad Fudadin yet off the mark, tried their utmost to negotiate the Barbados bowling for a period of time.

But the left-handed Fudadin was first to go nipping a catch to wicketkeeper Carlo Morris off the steady Best for five and soon after, Best, in action again, had Dowlin (24) caught at short cover by Hinds, to leave the home team precariously placed at 54 for three.

Royston Crandon, who did not open the batting after suffering a groin injury, was summoned to take up the batting responsibility but he never suggested permanence and could not handle a lifter from Best. Instead he gave a catch to Alcindo Richards at short third man, without scoring.

Barbados, who last won an outright victory at Bourda in 1980, certainly will cherish this victory for ever. More success was in store for the Bajans when wicketkeeper/batsman Derwin Christian, who made a battling half-century in the first innings, swept a ball to backward square for five off the experienced Hinds for five.

Mahendra Nagamootoo (0), Veerasammy Permaul (0) and Rayon Griffith who hit a pain-staking 13 that added some respectability to the total after Ramnaresh Sarwan could not have batted due to his thumb injury sustained on the first day.

Guyana would have been the first team to record the lowest regional first-class runs. They were skittled out for a mere 41 against Jaimaca in 1986 while they equalled their other regional score of 90 against the Leeward Islands at the Antigua Recreation Ground in 1995.

Barbados coach Vasbert Drakes told Chronicle Sport that his team played well and they will be very confident going into the final later this month.

“I think guys have played great cricket, they had wanted to win the competition on a very high note and this will subsequently boost their confidence going into the final.

Skipper Ryan Hinds was exemplary while all the other players came to the fore and played their part,” Drakes who played twelve Test matches for the West Indies stated.

The two teams will now meet in the KFC one-day crucial final round on Saturday at the same venue from 09:30 h.
