ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica (CMC) – Teenaged left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul ripped Jamaica’s batting apart with a five-wicket haul to give Guyana a handsome 40-run triumph in their KFC Cup one-day match at the Alpart Sports Club yesterday.

Set a paltry target after Guyana were dismissed cheaply for 163 off 41 overs, Jamaica collapsed to 123 all out off 41.2 overs, with the 17-year-old Permaul leading the way with five for 26.

Jamaica’s Brenton Parchment (17) and Danza Hyatt (19) appeared untroubled as they went about busily adding 39 for the first wicket and setting the foundation for what seemed like an easy victory.

But things begun to fall apart when Hyatt lobbed a simple catch to Deon Ferrier at extra cover off Esaun Crandon and Parchment followed in the next over, also caught at cover driving at Royston Crandon.

Jamaica then amazingly lost their last eight wickets for 82 runs as Permaul snuffed the life out of the middle and lower order.

Captain Wavell Hinds fell for eight and Lorenzo Ingram, 1, and Permaul picked up his first wicket when he had Tamar Lambert caught at slip by Mahrendra Nagamootoo for seven.

Earlier, fast bowler Jermaine Lawson continued his impressive showing in the regional competition, grabbing three for 30 as Guyana faltered after being sent in to bat on a slow pitch.

Derwin Christian scored 39 with three sixes and Sewnarine Chattergoon fell for 31 but Guyana lost wickets regularly and never found momentum.

West Indies vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan looked in ominous form when he belted pacer Andrew Richardson over cover for six in his rapid 16 but threw his wicket away when his now infamous hook shot was taken at midwicket by Hyatt off Lawson.
Lambert finished with two for 18 with his off-breaks.
