The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) says it will be directing its focus to conducting investigations and hearings for outstanding complaints that have been lodged at the agency.

A press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) quoted ERC Chairman Bishop Juan Edghill as saying that over the last year the commission's staff has been concentrating their efforts on completing the multi-stakeholder forums (MSF). However, Edghill said, from now until December 15 they will be focusing on bringing complaints to a close.

ERC Public Relations Officer Beverly Alert said 62 complaints have been lodged at the commission this year and the 56 that were not resolved last year were brought forward. She also said that with an investigative unit of only two staff members, the commission has resolved 67 cases though 51 are still outstanding.

At the same time, the ERC is still completing reports arising from the MSF which comprised 143 community conferences, 10 regional conferences and a National Conversation, held last week, which closed the process. A report from this forum will be compiled and submitted to the National Assembly for recommendations. The ERC also told GINA that it will be continuing its usual tasks which include a review of operations at the Guyana Lottery Company, and the JIG/UK's complaint against the publisher of the book Indians Betrayed. Both cases are scheduled for January 2007.
