Guyana's Cleveland Forde narrowly missed making it a double gold when he placed second to Venezuelan, Eduar Villanueva, in the 1500 metres at the VIII South American Games, Chef-de-mission Noel Adonis reported yesterday.

Villanueva completed the race in a time of 3:51.54, with Forde closing fast in 3:52.46. Third was Eder DaSilva of Brazil in 3:52.63.

The time clocked by Forde is his fastest in the 1500 metres, and his first sub-four minute time.

Forde was originally entered for the 10,000 metres but opted to do the 1500 metres in addition to the 5000 metres.

"The option obviously bore significantly silver rewards. Nevertheless, after the race there were still some athletes from other countries anxiously enquiring if he would be competing in the 10,000 metres: clearly measuring their chances if he did," Adonis said.

The Chef-de-mission added:"Forde is now a celebrity at these games and most people came to see him run today; even his opponents, I believe."
