Installation of the first consignment of equipment to furnish the diagnostic and treatment centres is expected to start before the end of the month.

A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the equipment which included oxygen/gas machines and x-ray items for the surgical department arrived on Tuesday on a Cuban aircraft. The equipment will be installed at the centres at Diamond, East Bank Demerara and at Suddie in Region Two.

GINA said each of the centres will be manned by a 27-member team of Cuban doctors and technicians who will be housed in dormitories established at the facilities. More equipment is expected for the centres at Mahaicony (Region Five) and Leonora (Region Three) as they are also nearing completion. Contractors at these centres have told Minister in the Ministry of Health Bheri Ramsarran that more work is needed before installation. Ramsarran said that the dormitories at the first two locations are ready for occupation.

The technicians will be facilitating the installation process and supervising the quality control capacity at each centre after the equipment has been tested. Each centre is expected to be able to provide general surgery and intensive care for seriously ill patients. The facilities are also expected to offer laboratory and ultrasound services.
