Guyana could be the regional outlet for an attractive line of Indian furniture that was on display at the recently concluded seventh GuyExpo, according to the proprietor of the Delhi-based manufacturing entity.

Vinod Kumar Gupta, proprietor of Shivam Manufacturing India, told Stabroek Business that he is sufficiently encouraged by the regional market for the wide range of teak furniture manufactured by his company to consider setting up a regional outlet in Guyana.

No stranger to local trade shows and exhibitions Gupta told Stabroek Business that he had attended trade shows in Guyana, including GuyExpo and the Berbice Expo. The Indian manufacturer told Stabroek Business that during his most recent visit to Guyana he engaged a local contact to assist with the broadening of his local distribution base.

Teak is one of the most popular woods used for the manufacturing of furniture in India and Gupta explained that his products are hand-carved by trained Indian workers.

He told Stabroek Business that his International markets include South Africa and Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname in the Caricom region. Furniture manufactured by Shivam International India has previously been exported to Guyana on "two or three occasions" Gupta told Stabroek Business.

Gupta, who has been in the furniture manufacturing business said that he was encouraged by the Caribbean response to his products and that prior to leaving Guyana he was hoping to engage local furniture distributors to discuss the marketing of Shivam products here.
