TOURISM, Industry and Commerce Minister, Manniram Prashad, Monday opened a new hotel in Georgetown, underscoring its importance in meeting accommodation needs for Guyana’s hosting of Cricket World Cup 2007 matches.

The hotel, Kanuku Suites, located in Campbellville, Georgetown, named after the biodiversity rich Kanuku Mountains, was built by Mr. Geer Meeghan, an avid lover of Guyana’s interior.

Accommodation is one of the more significant challenges Guyana faces for the thousands of visitors expected here for the quarter finals of the cricket tournament.

Mr. Prashad commended Meeghan for seeing the need and accepting the challenge.

The hotel aptly carries the theme “bringing nature to you” with furniture made from forest products. Kanuku Suites offers 20 rooms, a combination of four types to suit different preferences.

All the rooms are fully self-contained, offering bathroom, air conditioning, international direct dialling and a refrigerator, along with other facilities.

The project took 18 months to be completed.

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Chief Executive Officer of the Local Organising Committee for CWC, Mr. Karran Singh, were also at the opening ceremony.
