TODAY, the People's Progressive Party (PPP) celebrates its 55th anniversary.

In message to mark the occasion, the party paid homage to founder, former Presidents, Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Mrs. Janet Jagan, and pledged to continue the struggle for a democratic, free and united Guyana, of which all Guyanese can be proud.

The full text of the message reads:

“On January 1, 2005, the People’s Progressive Party will be celebrating its 55th anniversary. This is certainly one of the most important anniversaries in the history of our country.

The formation of the PPP was the beginning of a national movement dedicated to win independence for the then British Guiana and to work for social liberation for the working people.

In those 55 years, the PPP, working with other progressive and democratic forces, led the struggle for political independence and then the struggle for the restoration of democracy. Those struggles were not easy and Party members and supporters sacrificed a great deal fighting for the ideals of the Party.

During the post-independence years, the Party waged an unrelenting struggle for democracy. Working with allies at various periods, the Party’s work was finally rewarded in 1992, when the first free and fair elections in the post independence period were held.

At this time, the Central Committee of the PPP pays tribute to those heroic comrades who braved jail, detention, harassment, and who, in some instances, made the ultimate sacrifice.

We also, once again, pay tribute to the founder of our Party, Cde. Cheddi Jagan, whose dedicated work and unsurpassed leadership molded the Party and advanced the cause of the country.

We pay special respect to Cde. Janet Jagan, who occupied very important leadership positions, and distinguished herself in the most difficult times.

On this occasion, we extend best wishes to pout stalwarts, members, supporters and to all Guyanese.

The PPP pledges to continue the struggle for a democratic, free and united Guyana, one in which all Guyanese can be proud of Onwards to greater successes in the future.”
