The British High Commission, in celebration of the start of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece later this week, yesterday made a donation of sporting gear valued $82,000 to the Guyana Olympic Association.

The donation which included eight footballs, six pairs of gloves and two stop watches was handed over by British High Commissioner Steven Hiscock to acting President of the Guyana Olympic Association Claude Blackmoore.

The High Commissioner said he was happy to help in the development of sports in the country.

He said that one of the aims of the BHC was to assist in the development of youth, in particular working towards the development of sporting facilities in Guyana.

He related that he is a big fan of 400 metres runner Aliann Pompey and expects her to do well for Guyana at the Olympics.

"When I saw Pompey in Manchester, I was extremely impressed... to win gold at the Commonwealth Games [2002] is a huge accomplishment, and I wish her every success at the Olympics."

Hiscock said he too will follow the Olympics, and he hopes to see Guyana do well.

Blackmoore was happy with the donation, saying that any contribution to sports in Guyana is important.

He said the sporting gear will be given to the respective associations. (Faizool Deo)
