PNCR leader Robert Corbin yesterday unveiled the theme of his party's 14th Biennial Congress scheduled for August 27-29 and once again emphasised its support for power sharing.

The theme for the congress is "Building a platform for Peace, National Cohesion and Reconciliation and it was presented at the party's third general council meeting for the year yesterday at its Sophia headquarters.

A statement issued by Congress Place said that in an hour-long address, Corbin explained the thinking behind the choice of the theme and explained that given the persistent economic and political crises the country faces, the party has to map out an agenda for reconstruction. He observed though that reconstruction could not take place without establishment first of peace and national cohesion in the country.

The statement said that the PNCR leader explained that the party's embrace of power sharing must not be misunderstood to mean that it is unconvinced it can win an election but because it makes possible a system of governance that can, more than any other, guarantee to all Guyanese the sense of involvement and security they desire.

Corbin commented too on the necessity for the party's central executive members, Members of Parliament, and regional and local councillors to be more accountable to the people they serve and emphasised the need for the party to remain true to its founding creed of being an all-inclusive, multi-ethnic organisation dedicated to improving the well-being of all Guyanese.

Other presentations included a report by the party's general secretary, Oscar Clarke, that outlined the ongoing preparations for the congress and the efforts to improve the efficiency of the secretariat's operations.
