Award launched for best computer graduate

An award for excellence in the field of Information Technology was launched yesterday at the University of Guyana (UG).

The award is being sponsored by Vishnu Panday and Associates Inc and goes to the best graduating student in the Computer Science Depart-ment. It consists of a monetary award of $100,000 and a Shield of Excellence.

The student would also have his or her name inscribed on a wall plaque along with their photograph on the stairway leading to the upper flat of the new building. The sons of Vishnu Panday - Avi and Akash Panday - unveiled the plaque shortly after the launching ceremony.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UG Al Creighton accepted the award, while Dawn Fox the Dean of Natural Sciences (ag) noted that the award came as a part of Vishnu Panday and Associates Inc's tenth anniversary celebration. The award referred to, as the Shivraj Maraj Memorial Award will be given for the first time to the best Computer Science graduate in 2004.

Managing director, Vishnu Panday said he felt compelled to give something back to the country.
