The John Fernandes truck driver who was accused of driving dangerously and reportedly causing the Royal Castle fire was yesterday set free.
Krishandat Singh was freed since the prosecution had no evidence against him.
Singh had been charged with dangerous driving.
According to the prosecution’s case, there was only one witness in the matter and his testimony had no bearing on the state’s case.
The prosecution noted that Singh had alleged that he swerved from a car in the vicinity of Lombard Street on November 14 last, thus colliding with an electricity post, which sparked the fire at Royal Castle. However, police were unable to contact the driver of that car and so there was not enough evidence to make out a proper case against Singh. Royal Castle, Mohamed’s Complex and Auto Supplies were destroyed by the fire. Singh told Kaieteur News that he is relieved now that the case is over. “However, I’m still working at John Fernandes.
This is a burden off my head,” he said.
