Minister of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Bibi Shadick, has urged residents of Hogg Island and Caria Caria to report Trafficking in Persons (TIP) activities to her Ministry or the police.

Shadick has begun a campaign to visit communities to sensitise them about TIP.

“Trafficking is all about exploiting persons,” she said.

The Minister noted that persons who are poor and want better living conditions for their children are easy targets.

She added that there is evidence that indicates individuals have been taking young children overseas.

According to a GINA report, Shadick told the residents that there are anti-TIP laws already existing under Summary Jurisdiction (Procedure) Chapter 10:02 and the Criminal Offences Act Chapter 8:01 – and noted that her Ministry is working closely with the police to ensure that these laws are enforced.

A Corentyne liquor proprietor suspected to be involved in TIP was arrested by the police recently.

“People are cooperating and giving us information. The reports we receive are dealt with confidentially so persons need not be afraid,” Shadick stated.

On July 17, the police will embark on a nationwide campaign to recruit persons interested in joining the force.

The Minister encouraged residents from the communities to join the force, assuring that they would not have to worry for their welfare.

In terms of development in the two communities, Shadick encouraged persons interested in small businesses such as sewing, craft, and poultry rearing to get about starting the ventures.

One of the mandates of the Ministry is to assist groups with small loans and equipment for launching business enterprises.

Two other issues discussed were child abuse and the age of consent.

“We have to come to consensus so that legislation may be put in place to protect our children,” the Minister was quoted as saying.

Accompanying Shadick on her trip were Chairman of Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Esau Dookie, and Administrator of Women Affairs Bureau, Hymawattie Lagan.
