NEWLY crowned champions Shawn Badrinath and Nicolette Fernandes were declared top seeds following the conclusion of the Banks Mini Malta Southern Caribbean Squash Championships, Saturday.

Trophies were distributed to the various winners, while some team managers exchanged gifts on behalf of their respective teams and countries.

The three visiting managers also were all high praise for the hospitality, but said there was little time for them to see the country because of the amount of squash played.

President of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Andrew Arjoon presented the International Level 1V certificate to National Coach Carl Ince.

He also presented a special gift to coordinator Beverly Harper for her hard work in making the championships a success. She received tickets for a weekend for two at Shanklands Resort on the Essequibo, all expenses paid and another token from De Abreu Creations.

Arjoon also thanked sponsors Banks DIH Limited and the teams for a “wonderful” display.

“Hopefully, it would help to expand the interest in squash.”

He also had thanks for “perennial” supporters Toucan Industries and Woodpecker Products.

Banks DIH Public Relations Officer Ian Hercules said: “We want to applaud the organisers for staging such an excellent tournament and we are proud that we could have been the sponsors.”

Hercules pledged the bottling giant’s continued association with squash.

“If it comes again that we have to support you, I will plead with management not only to give you support, but double fold.”

Harper had special thanks for the Georgetown Club staff, some junior players and Kathy Shuffler in giving her much needed help.

Badrinath, also, had thanks for several people, including President Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Minister Sam Hinds for witnessing some matches and invited them to visit again to learn more about the game.

He had a special word for the other teams: “We’ll see you in Bermuda (for the Senior Caribbean Championships). Be prepared, it’s going to be hot next year.”
