Sugar production for first crop recorded at over 100 tonnes

GINA - The sugar industry has been progressing despite many challenges locally and internationally. The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO) has reported that production for the first crop was recorded at 127,610 tonnes.

At the Skeldon Estate, approximately 15,330 tonnes of sugar was produced. Production at the Albion Estate was recorded at 24,633 tonnes, while the Rose Hall Estate produced 16,447 tonnes.

Meanwhile, at the Blairmont Estate, production was recorded at 19,511 tonnes and at Enmore it was 12,728 tonnes. At La Bonne Intention (LBI) production was 12,901 and at Wales 13,059. The Uitvlugt Estate produced a total of 13,001 tonnes.

In 2003 GUYSUCO produced over 300,000 tonnes of sugar despite being affected by heavy rainfall. GUYSUCO's target for this year over 320,000 tonnes of sugar, is expected to be produced this year.
