GINA - Five Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Two (Pomeroon/ Supenaam) recently received their subventions of $3M each, according to Regional Chairman Ali Baksh.

The NDCs of Charity/ Urasara, Evergreen/ Paradise, Aberdeen / Zorg-en-Vlygt, Goodhope/ Pomona and Annandale / Riverstown all received their subventions for projects. Works were advertised and sixty percent of contracts have already been awarded.

Some of the projects include the upgrading of streets, desilting of trenches, the clearing of roadways and drains in housing schemes, the purchase of crushed stone for maintenance work, wooden revetments and the installation of tubes in various areas.

Baksh disclosed that 26 women in the Goodhope area recently formed a women's group involved in assisting the community in cleaning Government compounds and constructing a road. They are also involved in sewing.

Besides subventions, the region has been spending approximately $60M to rehabilitate main streets within each NDC. However, the Chairman said that the Region is appealing to residents to desist from parking old vehicles on the street shoulders since this has been damaging the roads. The Region is therefore asking the Traffic Department for assistance to ensure that the roads are clear.

As for education, the St. Deny's Amerindian community in the Region now has a new Head-teacher transferred from the St. Agnes Primary School in Georgetown. The Regional Administration has provided a building to house the head-teacher and residents of the community are assisting in dismantling the old building and constructing teachers' quarters.

Baksh explained that the Region is asking for assistance from non-governmental organisations to construct better quarters in the future.
