IT WAS more like an enormous bachelorette party than a fashion show when local designer Sonia Noel launched Simple Irresistible 2, her 2004-5 collection, at the Savannah Suite, Le Meredien Pegasus last Sunday, though the fashion part came off well enough in itself. The large room was packed with mostly women (hundreds actually) and a handful of men all clamouring to see the celebrated designer's latest offerings. The show started off tamely enough with the `Hat-eriffic!’ segment with models showing the designer's latest collection of headwear.

Things started heating up, however, with the `Cool Guys’ segment, ostensibly geared to highlight Noel's vastly expanded men’s wear collection. A roar of applause and a series of catcalls went up when two dreadlocked

male models made their entrance onstage, which pretty much set the tone for the entire evening. Local and foreign models - who sashayed their way through what was obviously a well-coordinated show, the only glitch being a slightly late - perhaps fashionably so - start and the PA system conking out every now and then. Each segment of the show was set under a different theme

Whether it was the avant garde wedding gowns or the slinky sleeping clothes or the daring night wear, Simply Irresistible 2 showcased the talent and versatility of the young lady of fashion.

In giving Sunday Chronicle her retrospective on last Sunday's show, Noel expressed pride on seeing the enormous turnout for her show and thinks that people came because they have come to associate her work with quality.

According to designer, people tried to utilise the preordering brochure made available to them during the show but there was a shortage of pens. They nevertheless flooded her store last week, this time most of them forgetting exactly which outfit they wanted. Noels says that she tries to break away from the crowd whenever she hosts an event.

"Ever since I did fashion shows with Betty West in Barbados, my concept of what a show should be has changed. She's been to Paris and other places in Europe and I've learnt from her how to make a show entertaining."

She stated that it can become pretty monotonous if people see just the models appearing one after the other showcasing the clothes. "You want to show the clothes, yes, but you have to be able to entertain people as well."

When asked about her thoughts on the viability of a fashion industry in Guyana's future, Ms. Noel was upbeat, positive.

"We Guyanese fashion designers have come a long way. At first people couldn't associate Guyana with fashion - they associated us with gold, jewellery and furniture etc. When I first started out people used to think that I was from Jamaica. Today, we have a lot of talented Guyanese and we are becoming more recognised. People are now associating Guyana with fashion."No doubt they will, especially since Sonia Noel's latest collection is not only going to be featured in Shacbeau but another regional fashion industry magazine as well. People - women especially - are going to wait with bated breath for Noel's next collection.
