The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) has condemned the protests that forced the closure of several businesses in the city last Friday. It also criticised the police for their failure to arrest those who were responsible.

"The IAC also condemns the assault and robbery by some of these criminal elements of a female of Indo-Guyanese origin who was going about her business peacefully," the group noted in a press statement.

Police had granted permission for the staging of a protest but some in the march decided to force the closure of stores along Regent Street.

In the past, street demonstrations on Regent Street have often ended in looting of stores and beating of staffers.

The IAC reminded newly appointed police commissioner, Winston Felix that recent history shows that such protests, more often than not, degenerate into mayhem, racial violence and ethnic terror.

"...The Guyana Police Service has the responsibility to ensure that marches of this type do not turn out to be violent and intimidatory affairs and, also, to apply the full force of the law on all those who are bent on lawlessness."
