Matthew Khan, winner of the Mashramani tournament and the Berbice Open yesterday slammed his way to the prestigious men's singles title in the National Sports Commission Independence Table Tennis Tournament.

Khan defeated Andrew Daly 11-10, 11-2, 11-5, 11-9.

But even though Khan won the men's singles title, the day belonged to 16-year-old Marlon Joseph who took three titles: the 18 years and under category, the 'C' category and the boys' doubles, which he won with Edinho Lewis.

Joseph, who attends Queenstown Community High School, was dubbed the most improved player for the year by project coordinator

Linden Johnson.

"Since his return from Venezuela, Joseph has become one of the most devoted players to the sport, and his enthusiasm has made him into a star player."

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Laurie Lewis challenged the table tennis players present, "… to move outwards to force young people all over the country to play table tennis."

He said he would like for Guyana to become as dominant in table tennis as in times gone by. "I would like to see in future tournaments that Guyanese would be more bountiful in picking up trophies. Let it be as it was before when countryman faced countryman for the finals in the Caribbean Championships."

In the other matches played yesterday, Donald Duff once again emerged victorious in the 'B' category defeating Joseph three games to one. Zach Gonsalves defeated Colwyn Leitch to win the 15 years and under and Jody Ann Blake and Khan gained a walk-over from Sidney Christophe and Trenace Lowe to win the mixed doubles.

With this title, Blake emerged overall winner as she has won in six categories.
