A decision from the US Commerce Department on a lawsuit filed by the Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) accusing the top six exporters of shrimp to the US of dumping, is now expected in July.

Guyana is listed as the 11th largest exporter of shrimp to the US and local exporters are closely monitoring the development of the lawsuit filed in December by the SSA; fearing that they may also be targeted, even though its shrimp is not cultivated but caught in open seas.

According to seafood.com news, the US Commerce Department is expected to issue a preliminary determination in its investigation of China and Vietnam by July 2 and on the remaining four by July 28.

Brazil, Ecuador, India, China, Thailand and Vietnam are all accused by the SSA of dumping farm-raised shrimp on the market which the SSA claims is putting them out of business.

Local shrimp exporters have contended that they are in the same boat as the US shrimpers since they too harvest wild shrimp and are also faced with strong competition from farm-raised shrimp.
