Fire Chief Carlyle Washington yesterday announced his retirement from the Guyana Fire Service.

Lance David, who last year went to Japan on a three-month scholarship sponsored by the Japanese government, will be the new Fire Chief.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, Washington's retirement follows that of former acting police commissioner Floyd McDonald and former chief of staff of the army Brigadier Michael Atherly.

"I have enjoyed my years here through thick and thin and it has been an experience," Washington was quoted as saying.

He has received training both locally and overseas and was sent in 1984 to the Fire Service College in Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom and upon his return was promoted to sub-officer. "From then on, I received several promotions to Fire Chief."

He described fire-fighting as a noble profession but was saddened that the public is not too mindful of fire safety and that there are too many fires occurring.
