Treason accused Mark Benschop is in good health and not ill, as was rumoured yesterday. But he is in solitary confinement as punishment for breaking one of the prison rules, Guyana Prison Service sources said yesterday.

Rumours were rampant yesterday about the man's physical state in the prison. However, a check at the prison revealed that Benschop was not ill and that a doctor who checked him yesterday morning declared him to be in good health.

A release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said the prison service advised that all is normal at its five correctional facilities across the country. It stated that no disturbance, death or unusual activity had been experienced yesterday.

Reports are that a relative of Benschop's had indicated that she would be protesting his punishment outside the Camp Street jail causing the area to be barricaded and police ranks posted. No protest action was taken and the leader of the PNCR, Robert Corbin and attorney-at-law Basil Williams visited the prisoner. Benschop is awaiting a High Court trial on the charge of treason.
