Fugitive tried for refugee status in US

Fugitive Omali Rogers was deported from the United States of America on April 26 after entering the country illegally and attempting to seek refugee status.

According to a police release signed by Crime Chief, Henry Greene, Rogers departed Guyana on April 14 using his Guyanese passport, No 073463, without a US visa inserted and travelled to Trinidad. On arrival he was admitted for two days after which he departed for Venezuela where he purchased an airline ticket and travelled to Miami.

"On arrival, he immediately asked for refugee status. He was however, detained in immigration custody," the release said.

Rogers, 26, of Lot 83 Amelia's Ward, Linden, is said to be wanted for questioning in connection with a number of crimes.

The release said investigations are being conducted into the man's activities while he was in Guyana.
