The preliminary report for 2002's National Population and Housing Census has been presented to the Board of the Bureau of Statistics, which will make the findings public.

Chief Statistician Lennox Benjamin yesterday presented the report to the Board, whose members are expected to study the findings before making them public, a Government Information Agency (GINA) report said.

Minister of Finance Saisnarine Kowlessar chairs the board, which includes Governor of the Bank of Guyana Dolly Singh, Deryck Bernard of the PNCR and Mohandatt Goolsarran of the National Centre for Education Resource Development.

Benjamin had hinted at a marginal population growth at the end of February, when the report was presented to Kowlessar.

The report was then submitted to Cabinet, but there has since been no additional information about the findings, fuelling speculation that there may be attempts to tamper with it. These were dispelled by Benjamin, who said the report is too complex to be changed.
