Minister of Tourism, Manzoor Nadir has commended the initiative of the National Bank of Industry and Commerce (NBIC) in restoring the Promenade Gardens.

The Mayor and City Council and NBIC last week signed a $24M deal for the bank to rehabilitate the gardens. In a press release Nadir congratulated NBIC and Mayor Hamilton Green, noting that it was a timely move in light of the recently launched Charrette Report focusing on historical Georgetown, in particular the Carmichael Street area where the gardens are located.

According to the release, Nadir commented that Georgetown still had a negative image of being a 'garbage' city' littered by burnt-out buildings, unsightly streets and garbage-strewn canals. Nadir said these observations are not only from residents of the city, but also thousands of visitors over the last few months.

Nadir urged other responsible corporate bodies to follow the lead of NBIC in restoring the former "garden city."
