The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) once again has cause to be proud as two of its officers recently successfully completed overseas courses, one of them being adjudged the best graduating student of his batch.

A release from the GDF said that Sergeant (SGT) Leyland Liverpool of the Ordnance Corps was adjudged the most outstanding student from among 49 participants in a recently concluded Ammunition Specialist Course in the USA.

His colleague, SGT Clive Dover of the Air Corps was among 14 students who graduated from the Fort Eustace Army Aviation Logistic School, Virginia, USA in March 2004.

According to the release SGT Liverpool gained a 99.93% grade point average on the 11-week course and was awarded the Comman-der's Coin of Excellence for his exemplary performance.

The sergeant also received a diploma and a certificate of Affiliation to the US Army Ordnance Corps as well as the International Military Student's Badge for distinguished graduates.

The release said that Liverpool, who holds passes in four CXC subjects, is a product of the GDF Academic Upliftment Programme run by the army's education department.

The army officer attended another course in the USA in 2001 and he once again performed creditably and was adjudged the most outstanding student in a Unit Supply Specialist Course in that country.

Meanwhile, the release said that SGT Dover achieved a grade point average of 84% on the Aircraft Structural Repairs Course and was awarded the US Army Aviation Badge and Wing for his performance as the most outstanding international student on the course.

It was stated that Dover attributed his success in the course to the knowledge he gained at the Art Williams and Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School, where he successfully completed a certificate course in engineering.

Liverpool, on the other hand, noted his exemplary performance on the course could be attributed to the resilience inculcated during his basic recruit training and other courses done locally.

The two officers were congratulated by Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier General Michael Atherly and other officers and civilian employees of the GDF.
