Authorities remain mystified over Friday night's abduction of the Iranian Director of the International Islamic College for Advanced Studies (IICAS).

Mohamed Hussein Ibrahim, 35, was dragged from his car just outside the IICAS premises located at 42B United Nations Place, Brickdam, around 10 pm by a group of gunmen who also shot and injured another official of the institution, Raymond Halley.

Ibrahim's wife, Shahnaz, who is in an advanced stage of pregnancy, is also perplexed by her husband's abduction and has been in a state of despair since the incident occurred.

The recently trained anti-kidnapping squad, deployed to track down Ibrahim, is still to come up with any leads that would shed light on his whereabouts.

Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent John Sauers said yesterday: "[The police] are working assiduously to reunite [Ibrahim] with his family..." Up to press time last night, the situation remained the same.

President of the Guyana Islamic Forum for Education, Peace and Religious Solidarity and Chief Executive Officer of RK's National Security Network, Roshan Khan, told Stabroek News in an invited comment, "I believe there are tremendous undercurrents in [Ibrahim's] kidnapping that may not be related to ransom or religious differences." Khan said he is acquainted with Ibrahim.

The Ibrahims, according to Shahnaz, attended the Anna Catherina mosque.

Shahnaz told this newspaper on Sunday that other than a mugging about a year ago, she and her husband have led a fairly peaceful life in Guyana since arriving here more than two years ago.

According to Shahnaz, in addition to his work at IICAS, Ibrahim operates a distribution service selling carpets and other similar products from Iran to local retailers.
