A $231 million contract has been awarded to fund the rehabilitation of the arrival terminal at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
A US$4,353 contract for the procurement of navigational aids and communications equipment has already been awarded. Several tenders were recently advertised to upgrade and improve the facilities at CJIA.
A tender was approved to revamp the Executive Lounge to include a bar and an Internet café.
There are also plans to have duty-free shops in the Arrival Lounge.
Re-tiling, the installation of new chairs and a roof are on stream this year for the Gallery.
When the Arrival Lounge is completed, work will commence on the Viewing Gallery.
Also, a contract was approved for the installation of cameras to monitor activities at various points at the airport.
Yesterday, at his weekly press conference, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon said the installation of the surveillance system has been further implemented and off-site locations are regularly receiving signals from the operation centres.
Dr. Luncheon said the work at CJIA is being followed by installation of cameras at other Customs entry points located at the city wharves.
Ultimately, the entire system of surveillance cameras would be networked for both on-site and off-site operations.
Last year, 7,500 feet of runway was improved and upgraded with a US$4.2 million contract.
The runway was part of an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) project which included work on the threshold and installation of runway lights.
Four vehicles have been made available to the airport under the IDB project for security, maintenance and operations.
