Two Guyanese for computer training in China

GINA – Education Minister Dr Henry Jeffrey and China’s Ambassador to Guyana Mr Song Tao yesterday signed the Exchange of Notes for the participation of two officials from the Ministry of Education at training courses under the 2004 Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) agreement.

Surendra Persaud and Paul Persaud, both senior officials within the Ministry, were selected from a number of applicants for training in Computer Network Applied Technology and Computer Software Technology.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Jeffrey said that the courses are of major importance to the Ministry of Education. He noted that the Ministry's strategic plan emphasises the dissemination of Information Technology in Guyana.

“The idea is to be able to link all management and educational resources to a central point and to have information about the education system at our fingertips,” he said.

Thanking China for the assistance, Dr Jeffrey recalled similar offers which had provided Guyana with needed skills. He also noted China's fast pace of development and said, “There is much Guyana can learn.”

Ambassador Song Tao had earlier noted that more than 35 Guyanese have been trained in various disciplines in China and they have returned to become experts in their fields and to contribute to Guyana's economic development.

According to Ambassador Tao, Guyana and China have enjoyed cordial and fruitful relations over more than three decades, since the establishment of diplomatic relations, but within the past year, there has been significant improvement is areas of practical cooperation between the two countries. He pointed to China's assistance with the International Conference Centre, documents for which were signed recently, and the training of Guyanese in bamboo craft and mushroom cultivation, martial arts and table tennis.
