TWO senior officials from the Ministry of Education will be leaving Guyana soon for a one-month training programme in the field of Information Technology in China.

Officials of the two governments yesterday signed documents for the participation of the two officials in the 2004 Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) training courses at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation in Georgetown.

Permanent Secretary in that ministry, Mr. John Isaacs, said the training courses are geared at improving computer science and technology in Guyana and focus on Computer Network, Applied Technology and Computer Software Technology.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Mr. Song Tao said the TCDC programme has been ongoing for many years.

Some 35 Guyanese are in China being trained in the fields of Agriculture and Medicine among others.

According to Tao, after being trained, they become experts in their field and contribute significantly to Guyana’s economic development and he pledged his government’s continued support to this country’s growth.

He also stated that Guyana is benefitting tremendously from several projects headed by the Chinese Government, including the building of a craft training centre, martial arts and tennis coaches.

Tao noted that with efforts from both governments, there will be more developments in the country.

“I believe this will create mutual understanding between our people”, the ambassador said.

Funding for the training programme would be given by the Chinese Government.

Minister of Education, Dr. Henry Jeffrey, noted that the training is of major importance to his ministry since great emphasis has been placed on technology due to the newly developed strategic plan.

“The idea is we should be able to have information on education at our fingertips”, he said.

The Government of Guyana and the People’s Republic of China have shared fruitful and friendly bilateral relations over the past 30 years in several areas in economic, technical and functional cooperation.

The conclusion of this initiative marks yet another milestone, which would contribute significantly to strengthening and deepening relations between the two countries, officials said. (SHAWNEL CUDJOE)
