GINA - Evidence from travel bookings and reservations has indicated that Guyana will see an increase in passengers travelling through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) this year.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Manzoor Nadir has disclosed that from all indications, Guyana should expect a bumper summer since bookings are encouraging.

During the month of December, holiday visitors coming here number between 10,000 and 13,000. However, last year saw an increase to 13,600 people.

Most of the tourists come from North America, the Caribbean and Europe. For last year a total of 49,625 tourists arrived out of a total of 100,911 persons. The Caribbean saw 24,779, while 8136 came from Europe.

For this year so far, 44,671 visitors from all across the world have arrived. During the month of August the most arrivals are recorded. For last year, during August 11,241 persons visited Guyana through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Guyana's tourist population consists of mainly overseas-based Guyanese, and persons from the Caribbean Region.

According to a release from Executive Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Mr Donald Sinclair, arrivals are due to external marketing of Guyana's tourism products and Guyana increasingly hosting international events.

Recently, GTA and private tour operators attended several tourism expositions and fairs in Europe, South America and the United States of America. Guyana also hosted regional and international pageants and boxing matches.

Additionally, the Guyana Office for Investment (Go-Invest) has facilitated several trade fairs in the region. A trade fair is currently on in Toronto, Canada.
