GINA -- STAFFERS of the Statistical Bureau are compiling and analyzing data on Guyana's National Housing and Census Report.

The preliminary report was officially released to the public last month.

The report discloses that the population in September 2002 was 749,150, an increase over the 1991 survey by approximately 26, 000 people or 3.5 percent.

According to the preliminary results, the sex ratio, which separates the population based on gender, indicates that the population is now closest to being equally divided between males and females.

However, an excess of males over females has been recorded in all regions except for Regions Four, Five and Ten.

The preliminary report outlines a broad summary of aggregate data, such as gender, age, size of household and number of buildings. The preliminary count is a snapshot of the population at a specific period of time.

The report represents a factual, summarized account of some of the core data gathered. The final report will give in-depth aggregates of the population and housing information.

The National Housing and Census survey was conducted from September 2002 to early 2003. Data were compiled during that period to earlier this year. The official report is expected to be released later this year.

The results of Guyana's Housing and Census are expected to be used for planning, budgeting and analytical purposes, as well as for assisting CARICOM in policy making.
