Guyana reach World Cup junior qualifiers

GUYANA advanced to the group qualifying round of World Cup championships at the Under-17 and Under-20 as Anguilla and Antigua pulled out of the preliminaries.

The local Under-20 boys now join Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados for the August 4, 6 and 8 qualifying series. The winner of the Grenada/Monsterrat preliminary series will also join in group qualifiers in Trinidad & Tobago.

Guyana were to meet Anguilla in the Under-20 the home-and-away preliminary series on the weekend of July 3-4 in the first leg in Anguilla and return leg here the following weekend.

At the Under-17 level, Guyana now join Cuba, Bermuda and the winner of the Dominica/St Vincent & the Grenadines preliminary round. The group qualifiers will be in Cuba, likely in August.

The local boys were to meet Antigua in Antigua for the first leg of the home-and-away tie on the weekend of July17-18 and the return leg here on the weekend of July 24-25.

Under-20 players named in the squad will go into camp at Sophia on Sunday and start training the following day.

Players in the squad are:

Goalkeepers Fidel Smith, Maurice Prince and Clydon Sampson;

Defenders Travis Martin, Sherman David, Devon Dummet, Odelmo Young, Reshwan Sandiford, Jermaine Frank, Dwayne Duke and Carlos Monkhouse;

Mid-fielders Shevon Seaforth, Lylton Ramsay, Philbert Moffat, Solomon Austin, Tichard Joseph, Colin Bowry, Sylvester Alpha, Carlos Grant, Jermaine Murray and Seon Ferrier; Strikers Konata Mannings, Dwight Peters, Peter Parks, Sean Sobers and Linden Symmonds.

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) will meet players from Georgetown, East Coach Demerara, West Demerara and East Bank Demerara, tomorrow at the GFC pavilion from 17:00 hrs.

Players from Upper Demerara, Bartica and Berbice will go straight into camp, along with one player from Rupununi and two from Kwakwani who will join the squad.

Linden players who did not participate in the trials, will have a try out next week Thursday, while some from Georgetown will join daily training sessions for assessment.

A revised set of 26 players will then be shortlisted, next week Friday.

A warm up match with St Vincent & the Grenadines is being planned for June 27 on local soil.
