IN what appears to be a fit of savage rage, three teenaged girls reportedly beat and strangled the reigning Miss Mocha queen on Monday night during a brawl at a Mocha Street corner. A group of residents cheered the attackers on, and reportedly resisted the efforts of others to rescue the victim.

Dead is Kenisha Baird, 19, of Lot 547 Housing Scheme Arcadia, East Bank Demerara. She reportedly died after three other teens staged an attack on her while she was on the street.

The Chronicle has learnt that three young women have since been detained at the East La Penitence Police Station.

The Police arrived on the scene sometime after Kenisha Baird was killed, and arrested the teens.

According to the dead girl's mother, Ms Annette Wharton, 41, she last saw her daughter on Monday night, shortly after 7 o'clock. Kenisha, her mother recalled sadly, told her that she was going to rehearsal and would be back soon.

The grieving woman said that her daughter left and she went to bed only to be rudely awakened by her son some two hours later.
"He come and wake me up and say that Kenisha get beat up and they gone with she to de hospital. This immediately got me started," she said.

Kenisha's brother, Stepphon Baird, 22, was at a nearby video shop playing games and did not know that his sister was being beaten.

According to relatives, Kenisha was on her way to a friend's house at about 9 o'clock Monday night when she was first confronted by two girls, who reportedly began beating her after a heated verbal exchange.

Soon afterwards, another girl joined the two, who were beating Kenisha. This third girl reportedly gripped Kenisha by her neck from behind.

Eyewitnesses said the pageant queen had no chance of defending herself. Within minutes, she had fallen to the ground. She was picked up and rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
One eyewitness said that during the attack on Kenisha, many villagers were present, and as the three teens began beating her, the villagers formed a circle around the combatants and encouraged the attackers with cheers.

And, when a few persons attempted to intervene, they were deterred by other residents who chanted, "Let them fight", the woman said.

Reports suggest that the motive for the killing stemmed from 'teen rivalry'. It was noted that Kenisha had had a few brushes with the teens prior to her death. They were apparently jealous of her achievements in winning several pageants.

Kenisha would have celebrated her 20th birthday on Friday. Relatives say that she was scheduled to participate in the Miss East Bank Talented Teen Pageant billed for June 19.
Her mother yesterday recalled how excited Kenisha was about the upcoming contest.

Kenisha's family revealed yesterday that although the teenager was affected by a heart ailment, she was a very jovial and enterprising girl who wasted no time in striving for the best, especially in pageants.

Her brother Stepphon told the Guyana Chronicle how shocked he was at seeing his sister's lifeless body lying on the road. Still in obvious shock, the young man, cried bitterly as he recalled his sister's playful habits.

A post mortem is to be performed on the body today. (Michel Outridge)
