THE Government says it "continues to be extremely concerned" at the protracted delay at the opening up of the cellular mobile service market to competition.

As a result, it is to review its granting of licenses for the cullular services market.

In a statement late yesterday issued from the Government Information News Agency (GINA), the Government said "the protracted delays are resulting in the inefficient use of the Global system for Mobile Communication's 900 MHz band by limiting the use of the band to a single operator." It said this has "serious financial implications for the Government and the people of Guyana."

Added the statement: "The Government has therefore decided to review its policy and the procedures and principles for the allocation of frequencies for licenses granted for the Cellular Services Market, so as to maximize its use.

"As a consequence, the National Frequency Management Unit has advised GT&T to put on hold all of its plans and programmes to implement a Global System for Mobile Communication in Guyana."

The statement said the Unit made that move on May 28.
