THE Governments of Guyana and Suriname have been invited to meet with Judge Dolliver Nelson, President of the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea for consultations, on the selection of the other members of the Tribunal that will hear the case relating to the Guyana- Suriname Maritime Boundary Dispute.

The meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2004 in Hamburg, Germany.

The summoning of Guyana and Suriname to Germany comes in the wake of Guyana's February 25 decision to invoke Article 287 and Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, in a bid to have the Tribunal intervene in bringing closure to its maritime boundary dispute with Suriname.

Guyana sent off a Statement of Claim to Suriname as well, indicating it was taking this move after years of futile efforts to get Suriname to resolve the maritime boundary dispute on a bilateral basis.
