PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC) - St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) defeated Barbados by 29 runs yesterday to record the first win of the rain-hit 2004 West Indies Women’s Cricket Championship.

Both other scheduled matches were abandoned because rain left conditions unplayable.

Batting first in a match reduced to 27 overs-a-side at Pierre Road, SVG gathered 109 for five off their allotted overs, with openers Vanessa Shallow (27) and Cordell Jack (22) getting the most runs.

Samantha Lynch contributed an unbeaten 17, while Maria Burnham was the most successful bowler for Barbados with two for 12 off six overs.

In response, Barbados, returning to the tournament for the first time in more than 20 years, reached 80 for seven off their 27 overs.

Rosita Browne (25) and captain Pamela Levine (10) were the only Barbadian batters getting to double figures, as seamer Melissa Billingy led the SVG bowling with two for six off five overs, supported by Phernell Charles (2-19).

The Trinidad and Tobago/Guyana match at Queen’s Park Oval, and Jamaica against St Lucia at Barataria were not played because the grounds were waterlogged.

Tuesday’s first round of matches were all abandoned as no-results and today is a rest day.

The tournament is scheduled to resume tomorrow with champions Grenada facing Barbados, Jamaica against SVG, and St Lucia meeting Guyana.
