ENGLAND skipper Michael Vaughan praised Chris Read's ‘little gem’ of an innings following their dramatic win over West Indies in Guyana.

Read's 27 off 15 balls proved decisive but Vaughan admitted his side had made heavy weather of chasing a target of 157 in their 30-overs-a-side contest.

"It got a bit close towards the end, we had a few players getting in and getting out again at crucial periods.

"But we've won the game and that's the main thing," he said.

It was only the fifth time England had won a one-day international in the Caribbean - and their first in Guyana, where they had been beaten on three previous visits.

"In the field we started off very well, both new ball bowlers put the ball in the right area and put them under pressure.

"Chanderpaul came out and played a really good knock and hit us around the ground at the end, but we were happy chasing that total," said Vaughan.

"We got home in the end, but we should have done it in a better manner."

Read was named man-of-the-match after losing his Test place to Geraint Jones because the selectors felt he was not contributing enough with the bat.

"If he had a point to prove, he did it in a good manner," said Vaughan.

"His contribution is crucial down the order. He's someone who can clear the ropes at the end."

Read said he would "work on" the "Test situation" at another time.

"Right now I'm just concentrating on the one-day stuff," he commented.

"I just tried to keep things going, get a run off every ball and then look for a few boundaries.

"I was hoping to get it down to needing 10 off the final over so to get it down to just three was unbelievable."

The two teams now head for Trinidad for a double-header next weekend with West Indies keen to put things right.

There was encouragement for them, apart from Shiv Chanderpaul's innings of 84, in the bowling of youngsters Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul.

"That's the only positive we can take from this game, both of them bowled pretty well.

"I thought Dwayne was outstanding and handled the situation well," said captain Ramnaresh Sarwan.

"We need to put this behind us and move on.” (BBC Sport)
