The Guyana Cricket Board is pleased to be part of the celebration of seventy-five years of West Indies cricket and of the identifying of those great stalwarts who have served the game with pride and distinction.

That search for the five greatest Guyanese and, later, for the five greatest West Indian cricketers will certainly generate huge interest and extremely intense emotional discussion and debate in towns and villages across Guyana.

After all, cricket is our national game and those who have made our flag fly proudly are our icons and our heroes and we are always anxious to salute them.

We applaud Quintus, an arm of Wisden, the world’s most respected cricket authority, for the initiative it has demonstrated in staging these jubilee observances.

We express our sincerest thanks to the sponsors whose support is always so crucially necessary for the development of cricket in the region. We owe a debt of gratitude to Scotiabank, West Indies cricket’s tireless friend and to Cable and Wireless, Shell, Busta, LIAT, the Pegasus and Air Jamaica, who are all contributing to make the Jubilee celebrations a success.

The sponsors have played their role. They have given to the Guyanese cricketing public a once-in-a-lifetime chance to contribute to that never-ending debate about the great, the greater and the greatest cricketers of our land.

My hope is that the response of the public will be massive and that the results would be an accurate reflection of the comparative merits of those who brought honour and glory to our country.
