West Indies and Guyana middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been contracted by the Trinidad and Tobago firm SM Jaleel and Company to promote two of its products in Guyana, Busta and Classic Cola.

This was disclosed yesterday by Robert Selman, general manager of Guyana Beverages Inc, a local subsidiary of SM Jaleel, at a simple ceremony held yesterday at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) head office.

Selman revealed that the company had been looking for someone who was well- known especially in Guyana to promote its products and former Guyanese cricketer Sheik Mohammed had

recommended Chanderpaul.

After negotiations, Chanderpaul decided to accept the contract which is for one year with the option of being renewed annually.

Selman said Chanderpaul has been contracted to travel throughout Guyana and to meet young people with whom he will share his knowledge of the game while at the same time, acting as a spokesperson for the company's products. He added that the cricketer will carry out his obligations based on his availability to do such promotions, which will depend on his playing schedule and other commitments.

Selman also disclosed that very soon Chanderpaul will be seen in ads, on posters and on the covers of exercise books which will be distributed free to schools.

He was loud in praise for the support Guyanese have given to his company's products over the years and mentioned that this was their way of giving back to that community.

In response, Chanderpaul who read from a prepared statement said that he looks forward to working with the company in sharing his passion and excitement for the game with the young people of Guyana. He also expressed appreciation to SM Jaleel for choosing him to represent the excellent West Indian products, Busta and Classic Cola. He added that cricket is a sport requiring dedication, discipline and perseverance and that as spokesperson for the two products he was sure he could instil such positive values and qualities in young people.

Clyde Butts, cricket development officer of the GCB, commended the company for its generous gesture and stated that Chanderpaul is a most worthy ambassador. He added that the youths in Guyana will learn from him the dedication, discipline and perseverance needed to succeed in life.
